Aksu is situated in central Xinjiang, at the southern foot of the Middle Tianshan Mountains and along the northern edge of the Tarim Basin. It lies between Urumqi and Kashgar.

Aksu is famous for its ancient Qiuci culture, Silk Road heritage, dramatic red-rock canyons, Buddhist grottoes, desert poplar forests and exceptionally sweet honey-heart apples.

“Aksu” means “white water” in the Uyghur language. The name reflects the rivers and water resources supplied by melting snow from the Tianshan Mountains.

May to October is generally the best period. Visit in May or June for green landscapes, July or August for seasonal fruits, and September or October for golden poplar forests and ripe apples.

Four to six days are recommended for visiting Aksu City, Kuqa Grand Canyon, the Kizil Grottoes and nearby cultural attractions. Allow additional time for remote canyons, deserts or poplar forests.

The leading attractions include Kuqa Grand Canyon, Kizil Thousand-Buddha Grottoes, Tianshan Tomur Grand Canyon, Kuqa Mosque, the Tarim River and Shaya Populus Euphratica Forest.

Travelers can fly to Aksu Hongqipo Airport or Kuqa Qiuci Airport. Aksu and Kuqa are also accessible by train from major cities in Xinjiang.

Bring layered clothing, a warm jacket, comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen and a sun hat. Aksu has strong sunshine and a significant temperature difference between day and night.
