Urumqi

Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, is often called the “Pearl of the Silk Road.” For more than two millennia, it has connected Eastern and Western civilizations. Today, the city combines Silk Road heritage, diverse ethnic cultures, lively bazaars and distinctive Xinjiang cuisine. Travelers can explore fascinating museums, taste sweet local fruits, experience Uyghur traditions and easily reach the nearby Tianshan Mountains, grasslands and deserts. Urumqi is also the main transportation hub and an ideal starting point for exploring both northern and southern Xinjiang.
